Ariel Brooks joined Robyn Catchlove on Catch the Lovely to discuss her brave new book Letters to My Son: Diary of Your Healing from Child Sex Abuse — and the conversation was raw, powerful, and needed.

Holds a BA (sec. ed; fine arts; Spanish)  /  M.A. (TESL)  /  CIDTT (Cambridge, UK International Diploma for Teachers and Trainers) Professionally, Ariel Brooks has traveled and taught all over the world both in public schools and universities. Her expertise in art, theatre and puppetry has helped her provide community service to empower, educate and entertain children. This ability was also a blessing when she was faced with guiding her own son through his healing process.  

Personally, she believes humans are here to make earth a better place for everyone and the best way to do this is by empowering and educating children. They should be provided with an exciting and stimulating environment while at the same time protecting them from predators at all costs because as children they are extremely vulneralable,

She believes there could be possibilities for predators to redeem themselves if they have a strong desire to do so. She also describes some New Age Therapies that could do the job. But if they won’t hold themselves accountable or are unwilling to do so then there is no choice but to make them publicly accountable and not allow them any access whatsoever to children.

To truly absorb the meaning of the statistics about child sex trafficking is overwhelming, but to read Ariel Brooks’ letters to her son and follow the horrifying revealing of the damage done to herself and her son brings these truths into a home and a family trying to do the best for each member. This is an extremely well written account of a mother willing to face the worst demons imaginable and defeating them. This book is so important for every caring parent to read. It is an amazing achievement that shares the tools needed to uncover the suppressed emotions due to shame, guilt and especially the threats of the abusers, such as “Daddy is going to cut off my head” or “Beto gave me a baby.” The red flags hinting at abuse, the correct parental approaches, the steps of successful therapy and the final breakthroughs to rebirth are shared to help all of us to be more observant and engaged in the lives of our children. Every parent should read this. Every grandparent should read this. We, as a community of caring adults can prevent this global tragedy as we awaken to the shadow world of those who abuse for the sense of control over their own damaged lives.
